“Be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it.” “You may get what you want, but you may not want what you get.” There are several adages that give advice about being prepared for the things we desire and ask for in life. I personally have heard them time and time again. Just like art, words can be interpreted differently by each person. However, I truly believe that even if you ask for something in life if you are not adequately prepared, you will not be able to truly enjoy what you ask for.
Over the past few months, I have begun to adopt the mindset of being led by my heart when it comes to how I choose to design my life. I spent a great deal of my life making choices based on pleasing others and attempting to meet social standards. After enough stress, unhappiness, and health challenges I decided that the key to personal success for me is to follow my heart’s Joy. One of the things that my heart has been drawn to is the freedom to travel. I enjoy new experiences, new cultures, new foods, and new environments. Travel is something that I made a priority for me and I began to design my life around having the ability to do so. I have several places on my list that I want to travel to. Most recently I traveled to New York City. I have had a passionate desire to visit and explore Brooklyn, New York. I am drawn to the lifestyle and culture of Brooklyn and I have been deeply intrigued to know more about it.
The plans for my trip to Brooklyn were full of exciting and specific details. I had been visualizing and imagining the visit for so long. I had locations, events, and activities on my “must do” list. When I arrived, I was so eager to begin my quest! I had finally manifested a goal that had been on my travel list for months. During the trip I had an awesome time over all. However, there was one thing that put a damper on the enjoyment for me: I was not physically prepared for the exploration of NYC. Yes, I was able to see a lot and do several of the things I had anticipated, but it wore me out! I had opted not to drive to NYC, so the various forms of public transportation were my only source, and that was an adjustment for me to walk so much, all day, every day. I must say, that it is one thing to get on the treadmill and do a set time of walking before getting off. It is a whole other experience to be forced to walk constantly all day long, when you aren’t used to it. It made me realize just how important fitness is in being ready to live out your dream.
The message that was really reinforced to me from my trip was that health and fitness is not just for leisure or hobby. Health and fitness has a tremendous effect on my success, achievement, and overall happiness in life. One of the biggest motivators for me to be healthy and fit has been having the energy and stamina to truly enjoy my life to the fullest. Let’s be honest with ourselves shall we? Can we really enjoy traveling, exploring, or even spending time with the ones we love if we are frail, weak, and tired? Proper diet and nutrition gives us the fuel we need to have the energy for the pursuit of happiness. Fitness helps us build strength and endurance to get out there and embrace all that life has to offer. No matter what your life goals are, you need to be alive and energized to achieve them. One thing is for sure, life is not going to just land at our feet while we sit on the couch. No matter what your goals are, a fulfilling life is something that involves action, movement, and vitality. So is your body ready to embrace all that life has to offer? If your answer is yes, then awesome! I am happy for you and celebrate you. If your answer is no, then aren’t you glad that you read this today? Don’t wait, because life isn’t going to wait for you. Get started now, so that when opportunities to pursue your goals and dreams come your way, you are READY!
